One Week to Go for ELCC State Fair Volunteers
080609 - 1800

A week from today, we'll begin the Photography Intake process at the State Fair. As Steve recently pointed out, three days, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are designated for intake (13-14-15 August). We meet at 8:30, Intake begins at 9 a.m., and runs until 5 p.m. each day.

A recent Yahoo group question elicited a variety of responses. The question was, "Can someone submit an oversized frame?"
The answers were varied. The best answer was, "The rules say keep it to within 1 inch; otherwise, it needs to be rejected."
So, to that end, I am enclosing a copy of rules for each of you to read and commit to memory. You'll be happy you did so if the question arises, "Does this photograph fit within the rules; or, what should I do if it doesn't?"
We are to meet half an hour early each morning for a very brief question-and-answer session regarding the rules, procedures, and other necessary matters.

Several of you have asked about the schedule. While it's been prominently displayed under the State Fair Volunteers banner at ELCC website, I'm enclosing a copy for each of you.
Clearly, we have other things beyond Intake we need to do at the State Fair. Those important dates are also mentioned in the schedule.
When push comes to shove, we'll probably make a few calls to be able to get the last few remaining bases covered...

I drive South on San Pedro from Lomas, stop at the light, make a left turn, and proceed east into the fairgrounds. African American Pavilion is located 2 stop signs from that light in southeast corner of that 2nd sign. I turn right, park back behind the building (south), and walk through west entrance. A map is enclosed…

I'm really proud of ELCC’s response!
With no introduction at any regular club meeting, when we finally began requests for club participation, you guys readily leapt to volunteer.

I think that sort of gracious reaction is the necessary grease that's going to make this tremendous event very highly successful!
Congratulations!!! See you there…

My letter to the ELCC Volunteers

We have only a few final modifications...

New Mexico State Fair

To those of you contemplating entering the photographic print competition, I strongly encourage you to do so. This is a venue that showcases photographers from all over the state, and is one of the most popular exhibits at the State Fair.

In doing so, please put your best foot forward when entering this type of photo event. These images should be your pride and joy. These photographs that you enter are the reason that you chose photography as your artistic medium. So be proud of your entries. Make certain that you have presented the best quality image that you can. Mat and mount the image properly and with care so that you have a clean, classic appearance that will look like you truly care about your craft.

Choose your photos not by what you think that the judges will like, but by what you like. Regardless of your choice of images, not everyone, including the judges, is going to like your photo as much as you do. Don't concern yourself so much about the point score or the ribbon awards. Feel good about what you entered and feel better about sharing your artful expression with others.

Photography, like most other forms of art, is very subjective with respect to what is good and not so good. The reason that we study, learn, practice, get critiqued and share our images with others should be to provide a sense of accomplishment and to improve the type of photography that is important to us. Please enjoy this event.

I want to thank LeRoy Perea for this compelling and very timely introduction to our Call for ELCC Volunteers to halp at the NM State Fair...

Success of the yearly Photography Show at state level depends upon Volunteers from Enchanted Lens Camera Club. Our organization takes in photos, presents them to the judges, hangs them, takes them down, then returns them to the photographer.
For 2009, we have nine days where our superb volunteers make or break photography in the arts. For each of those days, we typically have two or three shifts for the appropriate activity. So, we need quite a few volunteers…

I'd like to encourage newer members of Enchanted Lens to become State Fair Volunteers. A volunteer has the opportunity to see the latest professional, adult amateur, and youth photography from people around New Mexico.
Perhaps more importantly, each volunteer also has the opportunity to see and hear professional photographers judge all three classes of photography.

Time is of the essence – July 3 leaves 41 days to fill this important club roster!

It's the volunteer group who provide the awareness to put each photo before both the judges and the New Mexico public...
