For those of you who are suckers for flower photography like me, let's meet at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Tony Hillerman Library rose garden to shoot the roses. There are plenty of rose types and colors in this garden that is tended by the Albuquerque Rose Society and was built with your tax money.

The library is near the South West corner of the intersection of Menaul and Wyoming and its location can be found on the map following this link: http://g.co/maps/x6bva

We will be shooting close-ups, so macro/micro lenses will be in order, as will any tripod, diffuser, reflector or flash you usually use to shoot such pictures.

It is also a good opportunity to take those books you have been hording back to the Library.

Wednesday, May 9 the Mid-Week Marauders will visit the Leonora Curtin Wetlands Preserve a unit of the Santa Fe Botanical Garden. This beautiful spring fed wetland preserve is south of Santa Fe near the La Cienega exit (#271) off I-25 adjacent to El Rancho de las Golondrinas in La Cienega.

Let’s plan to meet before and leave at 7:45 a.m. from the Lowes/Target parking lot on Paseo Del Norte at I-25 so we will arrive at 8:30 AM when the gates will be opened for us. We will arrange car pools in the parking lot.

Since the Preserve is a non-profit membership organization I suggest we each make a $10 contribution for the preserve visit which I will pass to the Docent while we are there. I will collect your contribution at the entrance to the Preserve.

Once at the preserve we will be free to walk the trails and photograph the flora and fauna that is present. I suggest macro and landscape lenses with the appropriate reflectors, flash and tripod. Walking in the Preserve is quite easy and on reasonably well developed trails. We will be sharing the trails during our visit, but that should not disturb our photography.

If you plan to meet us at the preserve please wait for the rest of us coming from the car pool location before entering the preserve, so I can collect your money and name.

The following are the instructions on how to get to the wetland preserve gate from their web site as modified by me to show how to arrive when coming from Albuquerque.

The preserve is located on the I-25 frontage road south of Santa Fe.

From I-25 take the La Cienega exit (#271), cross the over the Interstate and turn right on the west frontage road heading north. The parking lot entrance is 1½ miles north after turning onto the frontage road.

All types of lenses will yield good shots at this excellent nature venue. The organization is also looking for creative shots that they might use in their advertising and media campaigns, but we can talk about that when we are there.

Let's plan to meet in the Smith's parking lot at Central Ave. and Tramway just before 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16 for a trip to the Sandia Crest.

We will explore the meadows and trails near the Kiwanis Cabin. Yes, this is the stone cabin on the top of the Sandias that you can see from Albuquerque. I had hoped we would be able to go to the Capulin Spring birding location, but the area is still not open and from what I was told by the ranger station it will be a while yet.

As is usual on these true no reservations/no regrets trips you need not let anyone know you will attend nor will it be necessary to cancel. Please just show up before 8:00 a.m. as we will leave the parking lot at exactly 8:00.

We will be shooting the scenery, flowers and any wildlife we can find, so all sorts of lenses will work.

Parking at the top of the mountain will cost $3 per car or you can bring your Golden Age pass. This trip will not be strenuous, but we will be at 10,000 ft. elevation and will walk a couple of miles total. Naturally bring plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks if you need them. I imagine we will be back in town before lunch.

On Wednesday, May 23 we will drive to the Soda Dam north of the old pueblo ruins at the visitor's center in Jemez Springs State Monument and then on to the Jemez River falls There should be plenty of water in the river so plan to take your neutral density filters to slow your shutter speed and capture the "smooth water" effect in both places.

Let's plan to meet in the Target/Lowe's parking lot on Paseo del Norte and I-25 at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, May 23 to arrange car pooling. We will meet on the North West side of the parking lot.
